Woman escapes with minor injuries after 10m fall
A shop supervisor in popular Gurney Plaza was very lucky to escape only with minor injuries when she fell almost 10m down a ventilation duct at a shopping complex here.It was learnt that several empty cardboard boxes in the storeroom buffered Ow Yong Hui Jun’s fall.
The 27-year-old sustained cuts and bruises on the hands when she fell at 11.30am yesterday from the third floor to the first floor of the Gurney Plaza shoplot where she worked.
A team of firemen who were conducting an inspection at the mall rushed to her aid when informed about the accident.
As anxious colleagues and curious shoppers gathered around, one of the firemen scaled down to the site using a rope and emerged some 20 minutes later with Ow Yong – to the applause from the relieved crowd.
It is learnt that Ow Yong had earlier entered a storeroom to conduct a stock check and used a ladder to do her work.
The concrete floor suddenly gave way and she fell into the duct.
‘I was so scared and was in total darkness after the fall. I kept shouting for help until one of my colleagues heard me.
‘I am grateful to escape with only minor injuries,’ she said.
In another case, 24 people, including nine women, had to spend the night in the lock-up for gambling.
The suspects, aged in the 20s to 60s, were picked up in two separate operations at 7pm on Thursday and 2pm yesterday.
The first operation was conducted at a coffeeshop in Jelutong, followed by the second at a house in Bandar Baru Air Itam.
Police also seized thousands of ringgit from the gamblers.
