Strong winds bring down crane
Strong winds on the east coast of the USA caused structural damage to a tower crane in Atlantic City on Saturday. Local reports differ in the level of damage to the crane, which is one of two on the Revel Casino project in the city.
Some say that jib came down with part of it landing on a police patrol car that was keeping people away from the building, causing minor injures to an officer, others suggest that parts came off of one of the cranes but that it remained erect.
One thing we do know is that the 60 mph winds have caused sufficient structural damage to the building and the crane for the contractor to decide to dismantle it.
Tishman Construction director of public affairs John Gallagher said: ‘‘We have begun remediation of the crane and are working in conjunction with the manufacturer and local authorities to ensure public safety, which is our top priority. We will continue to provide local hotel accommodations for those evacuated from the surrounding area until everyone is in agreement that it is safe for them to return to their homes.’
